A brief history about the Dragon Gold Cup Event
DRAGON GOLD CUP 9 – 14 June 2019 IJsselmeer, Medemblik, Netherlands
The Dutch International Dragon Class is honored to host the 75th Dragon Gold Cup event in 2019 in Medemblik, Holland (Netherlands) in close cooperation with the Royal Hollandia Yacht Club and the Royal Netherlands Yacht Club. And with full support of the Medemblik municipality.
The Dragon Gold Cup event was initiated in 1936 by the Clyde Yacht Club’ Association, Scotland.
The objective since 1936 is “bringing together as many competitors of different nationalities as possible for yacht racing in Europe in a friendly spirit“.
The first Dragon Gold Cup was sailed in 1937 in Hankø, Norway, in honour of the Norwegian yacht architect Johan Anker, who delivered the first three Dragons of his design in 1929.
Since 1938 Dutch Dragon sailors have been participating. Team Bakker (H 213) was the first Dutch winner during the Dragon Gold Cup in Troon, Scotland in 1987. Team Imhoff (H 13 / H 247) was winner in 1988, 1989 and 1993.
Except for the years 1940 through 1946, the Dragon Gold Cup has been organized every year in one of the West European Countries where a substantial Dragon fleet exists. In 1955 the Dragon Gold Cup was organized for the first time in Holland by the Royal Netherlands Yacht Club in Muiden.
In 2014 the Dragon Gold Cup was also sailed from Medemblik with a total of 87 participating Dragon teams from 17 different countries. The fleet was moored at floating pontoons in the Oosterhaven, with the formerVisafslag, now clubhouse of RYC Hollandia as Race Office and Café Brakeboer as heart of the social events. The same concept will be applied in 2019.
